- Andrew ΓÇ£Rube" Foster is
- often called "The Father of
- Black Baseball." Yet
- people forget that he was
- an outstanding pitcher
- before he became a brilliant manager, and
- then founder and president of the first major
- black league in baseball.
-
- In 1902, the 6' 4" tall, 225-pound righthander
- may have been the best pitcher in the country,
- white or black. Unfortunately, he was not
- allowed to play in the major leagues because
- he was African-American. Instead, he pitched
- the Cuban X-Giants to the African-American
- championship, as the winning pitcher in
- four of the teamΓÇÖs victories over the
- Philadelphia Giants in the Black World
- Series.
